Yunnan

Yunnan is a province of the south of China, bordered by Burma, Laos and Vietnam. The Western area is dominated by a notched inaccessible high plateau of deep throats. The forest accounts for 24% of the surface of the province, whose wood reserves are estimated at 1 billion m3. It shelters a varied fauna and a flora. The majority of the inhabitants of Yunnan live in the east, on a relatively low plate. Kunming is, the capital, which is the most important city and the principal industrial center of the province.

The economic activities are agricultural and industrial: the rice and the corn produced in great quantity make of Yunnan the attic with grains of China. One cultivates also cotton, tea, cane with sugar and citrus fruits. Among the mineral resources, one finds tin (in Gejiu), copper (in Dongchuan), iron ore (in Wuding) and coal, present in the basement of the province.

The economic potential of the area is important: hydraulic reserves, mineral natural resources, agriculture and tourism are exploited still relatively little. In 2004, the GDP recorded a growth of 11,5%, in particular in the secondary industry (+ 15%) and tertiary sector (+ 10,7%).

Industry:

Biological Resources Development and Innovation Industry:

Development and innovation will focus on the increased production of natural medicines, green foods and health products, flowers and green horticulture and biochemical engineering as the priority. Advanced technology will be increasingly used, and an overall marketing system established. In this way a system of biological resources development and renovation will become more competitive on the open market.

Tourism Industry:

The infrastructure for tourism will be continually examined and improved, the tourism market expanded, and the quality of products on offer to tourists will be raised and closely monitored. This will greatly improve the tourism environment in a bid to build Yunnan into an international tourism destination and a tourism distribution center.

Tobacco and Cigarette Industry:

The quality of cured tobacco and cigarettes will be improved, and a vigorous sales campaign will be held to expand international and domestic markets and bring the development of the tobacco and cigarette industry to a new phase.

Mining Industry:

Precision and in-depth processing will be improved, and the industrial chain extended to increase the utilization rate of resources, and more valuable products will be developed in order to ensure the sustainable development of the mining industry.

Power Industry with Hydroelectric power as the Mainstay:

With the construction of hydropower stations as the focus, the electric power structure will be optimized. Continued construction of power grids and the implementation of the project to transmit power from Yunnan to the eastern regions of China (Guangdong, Central China and Eastern China) and to foreign countries (Thailand etc.), will help build Yunnan into China's important base for hydroelectric power production.
