Chongqing is situated at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, at 105"11' - 110"11' east longitude and 28"10' - 32"13' north latitude. It is 470 kilometers from east to west and 450 kilometers from north to south.
Chongqing is China's biggest municipality in terms of area and population. It covers an area of 82,400 sq. km. and administers 15 districts, 4 county-level cities and 21 counties. By the end of 2002, the total population is 31.07 million.
There are almost 10,000 factories with fixed assets of over 73 billion yuan and a working staff of 1.2 million. Its pillar industries include machine building, metallurgy, chemicals, environmental protection, foods and tourism. In addition, prominent industries, such as electronics, building materials, glass and ceramics and daily use chemicals are also comparatively well developed. The increments of industrial production in 1999 had risen by 10.5%.
Automotive Industry
Since the "10th Five-Year Plan", Chongqing auto industry has been making steady progress. The annual growth rate of output value is 19.36%, and the production and sales volume in 2000, 2001 and 2002 ranked the 4th in the whole country respectively. Ford Motor Co., the world's second largest automobile manufacturing enterprise, and Changan Group set up a joint venture, Changan Ford Automobile Co., Ltd. in 2001, which specializes in production of economic cars and middle-and high-grade cars.
All together, there are 17 auto manufacturing enterprises, among which, there are 8 ones (to be entitled to produce chassis) specializing in manufacture of cars, micro cars, light-duty trucks and heavy-duty trucks, namely Changan Automobile (Group) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Changan Ford Automobile Co., Ltd., Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile Co., Ltd., Qingling Motors (Group) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Heavy-duty Truck Group, Tiema Group, Chongqing Yuzhou Automobile Works and Beiquan Automobile Works; and 9 enterprises engaged in refitting automobiles and producing buses, tippers, crane cars, aerial lift vehicles and bullet-proof cars in Chongqing till the end of 2003. Now, Chongqing has a comprehensive annual production of 400,000 micro cars, 150,000 cars, 70,000 light-duty trucks, 20,000 heavy-duty trucks and 15,000 refitted vehicles. This year the totals asset of the industry reaches 58.2 billion yuan, net value of fixed assets 17.6 billion yuan and asset-liability ratio 59.7%.
In 2002, Chongqing achieved sales volume of 354,900 automobiles, accounting for 10.92% of the whole country, and sales income of 44.73 billion yuan, ranking the 4th in the country. In particular, sales of Chongqing-made micro cars accounted for 30% of the market share and ranked the 1st in the country for successively 5 years since 1999. Production of micro car engines in 2002 was 322,000 sets, ranking the 1st all over the country. Gross industrial output value of Chongqing auto industry achieved 57.57 billion yuan, accounting for 44.36% of the whole city; tax revenue was 2.47 billion yuan, accounting for 12.5% of the whole city; and the working staff exceeded 200,000, accounting for 3.7% of the whole city's urban working staff in 2002.
Metallurgical Industry
With a development history of 100 years, metallurgical industry in Chongqing comprises two categories: steel and nonferrous metal. Moreover, Chongqing has become the biggest aluminum processing base in China. Gross industrial output value of Chongqing metallurgical industry achieved 8.961 billion yuan and sales income realized 8.029 billion yuan in 2000. There are 137 state-owned and non-state-owned metallurgical enterprises (with annual sales income of over 5 million yuan) in Chongqing. Among them, there are 2 extra large enterprises namely Chongqing Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. and Southwest Aluminum (Group) Co., Ltd. and 1 large enterprise; and the others are small and medium companies. All together there is a working staff of 86,000.
Chongqing has an annual capacity of over 2,000 varieties in metallurgical industry. The annual capacity of the 10 kinds of nonferrous metal reaches 75,500 tons, among which, there are 100 kinds of core products and nearly 2,000 varieties and specifications in steel industry. The main products include pressure vessel plates, armor plates for shipbuilding, structural alloy steel, shift tool steel, alloy spring steel and steel wire, etc.
Chongqing Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. is the locomotive enterprise in Chongqing steel industry. Total assets of Chongqing steel industry were 11.977 billion yuan and gross liabilities were 6.956 billion yuan at the end of 2000. There into, the total assets and total liabilities of Chongqing Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. reached 11.867 billion yuan and 6.158 billion yuan respectively. Moreover, the company achieved a gross industrial output value (in constant price) of 3.595 billion yuan, sales income of 5.154 billion yuan, export delivery value of 369.61 million yuan and profits of 14.997 million yuan that year. Other leading enterprises in Chongqing steel industry are Chongqing Steel Wire Works and Chongqing WuJiang SanJiaotan Manganese Co., Ltd. The electrolytic manganese produced by the latter has a purity of 99.94%. Thanks to its high quality and low price, this product falls short of demand in international markets.
The leading enterprises of Chongqing nonferrous metal industry are Southwest Aluminum (Group) Co., Ltd, Chongqing Small and medium smelter (Group) Corp., Ltd. and Chongqing Fuling Dongsheng Aluminum Co., Ltd. All together, there are 14 small and medium companies, in which, there are 8 processing enterprises and 6 smelter enterprises. The total assets of Chongqing nonferrous metal industry are 6.954 billion yuan, among which, total assets of Southwest Aluminum (Group) Co., Ltd is 5.816 billion yuan. The main products in Chongqing nonferrous metal industry are as follows: electrolytic copper, electrolytic aluminum, electrolytic lead, aluminum products, copper products, nonferrous metal powder and manganese, etc. Furthermore, Southwest Aluminum (Group) Co., Ltd. is the largest comprehensive aluminum processing enterprise in Asia with a gross industrial output value of 2.021 billion yuan and sales income of 1.962 billion yuan in 2000.
As another leading enterprise and an old state-owned enterprise in Chongqing nonferrous metal industry, Chongqing Smelter (Group) Corp., Ltd specializes in manufacturing electrolytic copper, electrolytic lead, gold, silver and nonferrous metal powder. Its sales income in 2000 was 80.143 million yuan. In addition, Chongqing Fuling Dongsheng Aluminum Co., Ltd. is also a leading enterprise with remarkable economic benefits. For example, in 2000, the company achieved an output value of 108.5 million yuan and sales income of 180.72 million yuan, and had an annual capacity of 25,000-ton electrolytic aluminum. Its main products include aluminum ingots; aluminum alloy cast rods and aluminum bus, etc.
Electromechanical
Electromechanical industry in Chongqing is developing steadily. Among the top 10 export-oriented enterprises in Chongqing, 8 are engaged in electromechanical sector. In 2001, export volume of electromechanical products in Chongqing was US$678.19 million, accounting for 61.5% of the city's total export, only to over-fulfillment the year's export target (US$575 million). Export volume in electromechanical sector reached US$383.06 million, accounting for 55.2% of the total in the first half of 2003. The main sub sectors of Chongqing electromechanical sector are automobile manufacturing, motorcycle manufacturing and their components manufacturing. The leading enterprises engaged in auto and components manufacturing are: Changan Automobile (Group) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Changan Ford Automobile Co., Ltd., Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile Co., Ltd., Qingling Motors (Group) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Dajiang Automobile Works, Chongqing Changjiang Bearing Industrial Corp., Ltd. and Chongqing Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., etc. The leading enterprises specializing in motorcycles and their components manufacturing are: Chongqing Lifan Group, Chongqing Zongshen Motorcycle Group, Chongqing Loncin Motorcycle Group, Chongqing Jianshe Industrial (Group) Co., Ltd., China Jialing Group, Chongqing Qiutian Motorcycle Components Factory and Chongqing Qingshan Industry Co., Ltd., and so on. From January to October 2002, 296,700 automobiles and 2,947,400 motorcycles were produced in Chongqing; and gross industrial output value of 21.239 billion yuan and 18.673 billion yuan (in constant price) were achieved respectively.
The other leading export enterprises in Chongqing electromechanical sector are: Chongqing Electromechanical Equipments Import & Export Co., Ltd., Chongqing Hans Anhai Youyang Import & Export Co, Ltd. and Chongqing Metals Minerals & Machinery Co., Ltd. etc. Motorcycles are main electromechanical exports in Chongqing; however, the export value of non-motorcycle products was up to US$142.08 million. In the key electromechanical exports, export volume of instruments was US$25.38 million; that of gasoline (diesel) engines and their components was US$18.76 million; that of automobiles and their components was US$7.95 million; that of steel products was US$9.11 million; that of bearings was US$2.59 million; that of telescopes was US$2.40 million; that of batteries was US$4.34 million; and that of nonmetal permanent magnets was US$2.53 million.
Chemical Industry
Chemical industry in Chongqing is developing steadily. Gross industrial output value in 2002 was 10.04 billion yuan, an increase of 12.68% than that of 2001. It was the first time that gross industrial output value in chemical industry had exceeded 10 billion yuan in Chongqing's history.
Adjustment of ownership structure in Chongqing chemical industry made much headway in 2002. As per economic nature, in 2002, output value of newly limited-liability companies increased by 96.21% than that of 2001; that of chemical industry in counties increased by 21.51%; that of the private chemical industry increased by 17%; that of the joint-stock enterprises rose by 1.82%. As per trade, output value of raw materials in chemical industry in 2002 increased by 17.74% than that of 2001; that of fertilizers increased by 10.91%; that of coatings increased by 14.17%; and that of rubber products increased by 16.71%.
According to the statistics of Chongqing CIQ, among other industrial chemicals, glycol and phenyl ethylene are the two basic ones in a great demand by Chongqing. In 2001, import volume of these two kinds of products was US$23.31 million and US$10.26 million respectively. However, there's no import in phenyl ethylene and the import volume of glycol was only US$5.7 million in 2002, less than 1/4 of that in 2001. In the first 3 quarters of 2003, import volume of glycol was US$930,000, decreasing 83.6% than that of the same period in 2002; and moreover, there's no import in phenyl ethylene.
